Our main theme for this first unit of work is mark making, for my project so far I've been inspired by several different things that have enabled me to find and create new ideas and developments.

Firstly, as a group we went to visit the cathedral in Norwich city centre, I found this visit very inspiring as due to the building being fairly old it carried many different, unique marks and surfaces. Instead of capturing the building as a whole within my image, I was more interested in the texture and surface of certain parts of the cathedral, I created 'rubbings' onto paper using the surface of the walls and floor, then layering this with the small, individual marks. I preferred this way of working as it enabled me to see the smaller, more interesting textures and surfaces and to reflect upon these within my images. From this inspiration I have produced and developed my sketchbook work using these marks to create more ideas and compositions.

Marks inspired by Cathedral

Visiting the cathedral gave me a good starting point to my project, from this we then visited certain areas around the city where I gained more of an insight into the history behind Norwich and areas I hadn't visited before but that were very interesting and inspiring. The cobbled streets, rivers, worn out buildings all were things I saw when looking around the city.
