For our third part of this year's project, it's been based on collections within the castle museum, when visiting the castle and looking around I mainly found inspiration from the collected rocks, stones, crystals and shells and the shapes and patterns they have. Moreover, I found that the actual building itself carried interesting marks and shapes due to it's old age and deterioration which I found inspiring when making marks within my sketchbook.
For the first part of this project, I have made a variety of back grounds using acrylic paints to create a textured surface to then draw rocks and crystals onto, I found this worked well as it creates a layering effect for my drawing rather than having a plain coloured back ground. Although my usual style is to keep to the neat and clean plain coloured card as my surface to draw onto, I found this was a new way for me to work which I enjoyed and have pursued. I then experimented with cutting out triangular/geometric shapes stuck onto plain coloured card to then draw over, this method however, I didn't find as successful as the drawing gets somewhat lost within the image and taken over by the bold, coloured shape. Due to this, I then started to try using a larger section of paper as my back ground and used this as a composition which meant that my drawing was the main point of focus, still with an interesting background. Overall, this experiment with composition and background colour and placement has enabled me to try out a range of things and know which I prefer and feel looks most successful.
Moreover, within the museum I found that quite a lot of ceramic objects had floral patterns in them which also inspired me, the different ways they were made and the vary in line. I don't enjoy drawing objects as a whole so the fact they had a pattern/image within it gave me inspiration to experiment. I have carried on with similar backgrounds, however made a variety of plain, coloured, abstract backgrounds and then more messy backgrounds using pastel and paint, I prefer the messier backgrounds in terms of what the drawing looks like as it makes it more vibrant and a larger contrast between a fine line drawing and a bold surface. Despite feeling successful with my work so far, I still feel I could try out different methods of working, for example, looking at specific line and detail within one of my shell or plant drawings and making this into an image.
