Yesterday we had a tutor called 'Grainne' who came in to talk to us and help us with our ideas, we each spoke about our ideas for this project and discussed them. I found this workshop really useful as it enabled me to hear other people's ideas and to listen to what people think of my ideas too. From this, I have made a decision to focus more on my idea of promoting a healthy lifestyle, specifically for children between ages 6-12 as this is a major stage in a child's life where their growing and developing, having influence of a healthy diet and lifestyle will help to keep them fit and healthy and hopefully keep away from disease and illness, especially preventing this from developing in their future lives. Part of my goal for this project is to highlight how important healthy eating is, how children should take their time to and to digest their food properly, sitting down with friends of family for each meal, having no distractions of toys, video games or tv. Giving children the concept of having a gut 'flower' inside of them can make this seem more exciting and motivate them more to keep to eating healthy.
"Children require regular meals and snacks to give them the energy and nutrients they need to grow and fight off illness. Eating family meals together will encourage them to enjoy a variety of foods. Snacking all day in place of meals, usually results in eating an unbalanced diet. To encourage good eating habits try to sit down and eat meals as a family without the distractions of the television or computer games." This supports the idea of taking your time to enjoy food and to let it digest properly by purely focusing on eating and forgetting about any source of an electrical device. Nowadays, once children hit the age of around 6-7 they become familiar with electronical devices as these are being used much more in homes, society and even within schools, this makes it easier for children to get hold of these and use them regularly, however this does distract them a lot, resulting in missing important meals of the day etc.
Moreover, when looking for information on the 'gut flora' I found the definition for the 'intestinal flora' which means, 'the natural bacterial content of the inside of the digestive tract'. There are many different, important functions of the gut flora, due to this, the promotion of feeding your gut flora (flower) to children is vital.
