Devore Samples

I wanted to experiment with techniques for the first part of my project, this enabled me to see how my design looked using different techniques, colours and styles of printing. These Devore samples I have made aren't exactly how I wanted them to turn out as the Devore didn't work for every part of the design, only some parts worked, this could have been because I didn't pull the Devore through the screen enough times or that there wasn't enough pressure when printing the design. However, it was still a learning curb for me, I dyed my samples to make them look more vibrant and appealing, targeting my audience of children, they enjoy seeing bright, bold colours and understand these more than light, muted colours.
I used the silk satin viscose for these samples, and dyed one 1.5 grams of acid electric blue, which is the back side of the fabric, and 1 gram of pink red dyrect dye which dyes the front side of the fabric and a spoonful of ammonium sulphate as the fixer. The dyrect dye in this sample is the dominant colour, therefore I chose a bolder/darker colour for the acid dye to enable it to try and overtake the dyrect dye.
The method for this technique is to tape down your fabric, screen print/hand paint the Devore paste onto the fabric, wait until this is bone dry to heat press it for 30 seconds; you then wash this out and where the Devore was printed, some of the fibres have been eaten away by the Devore, leaving those parts of the fabric thin and see-through. You then have the option to dye your fabric and because there are two different materials within one fabric, you can cross dye it, which is what I have done for my samples.
